We make the world safer!

We’re 1 Year Old!!!

One year ago, the first Community Safety/Security Newsletter was published on this website!

Hopefully we have been able to give you valuable information to help you ensure the safety of your families, communities, and workplaces!

With growth comes change, and as SRM Associates grows, you will be seeing changes here as well.  We are looking into re-vamping the SRM Associates’ Our Safe Towns” website, and you will see changes in our Newsletter as well.

I have asked my long-time friend and associate, Mr. Bill Benson, to take over the publication of this Newsletter.  Bill helped me during my first years of involvement in safety and security issues, and his passion for making the world a safer place is as strong as my own.  He is a welcome member of the SRM Associates team!

I hope that you enjoy watching as we take the next step towards the future.  Please let us know what you think of our new look; your input is welcome and appreciated!  Together, we can make the world a safer place!!!

Community Safety/Security Newsletter

- March 2007

From The Editor

Welcome to the transitory format of the Community Safety/Security Newsletter!

One of the drawbacks of joining up with an established outfit is the learning curve one must endure to get up to speed with the current “goings ons.”  Happily, with the re-vamping of SRM Associates’ Internet presence, the playing field is leveled, and we all get to learn anew!

I am a Veteran Marine, data miner, Soldier, and author.  I share with Stephen a passionate desire to help you, the private citizen, better prepare yourself for those catastrophic events that effect our communities from time to time.  I am a firm believer in preparedness, and I believe that the private citizen is as much a part of disaster preparedness as any organized First Responder.

I will share more with you as time goes by, but for now, I look forward to providing more information to help all of us make the world a safer place!

- Bill

Congressman Rohrabacher's office (in Orange/LA County) is still sponsoring regular classes on anti-terrorism topics.  If you would like more information on these classes, please let us know.

On March 28, Stephen presented information on DHS’ proposed regulations for Chemical Facility Vulnerability Assessments to the San Diego Community Awareness and Emergency Response Group.  For more information on this topic, or to receive a copy of the presentation slides, please contact us at: info@oursafetowns.com .

Stephen and Bill are furiously working on the next E-Book: “Keeping Our Chemical Facilities Safe” in anticipation of DHS’ publication the RAMCAP Methodology.  Stay tuned!

Stephen and Bill will be conducting a class on the Impacts of Evacuations on Small Town Communities for Del Norte County, California.  This class will emphasize the effects of a tsunami-driven evacuation, but will also address general concerns found in any mass casualty event.  If you are interested in scheduling this class for your organization, please contact us at info@oursafetowns.com .

In the event that you lose water pressure due to a catastrophic event, remember that the holding tank behind your toilet holds fresh water (NOT THE BOWL!!!)  And that your hot water tank holds enough fresh water to last you for a few days...

Combating Terrorist Financing in Europe: Gradual Progress

By Michael Jacobson

The Washington Institute for Near East Policy

Published: March 26, 2007

In the wake of the July 2005 terrorist subway and bus attacks in London and the disrupted terrorist plot to blow up U.S.-bound planes flying from Heathrow airport in August 2006, the British government recently launched a new strategy to combat terrorism financing. Ed Balls, Britain's economic secretary to Her Majesty's Treasury (HMT), said the strategy was designed to address "an enduring and continually changing terrorist menace to the [United Kingdom]." In Balls's view, financing is the "lifeblood" supporting the growing terrorist threat. Britain's ambitious and timely initiative is an important step forward. But broader European efforts to tackle terrorist financing -- particularly the efforts of the European Union (EU) -- still lack consistency and effect. Bureaucratic obstacles limit European efforts to designate terrorist entities and freeze their assets.
